Highway Wolf Gives Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ In The Years” A Reggae-Tinged Revival

San Francisco, CA | June 18, 2026 Highway Wolf is casting a classic rock favorite into new waters with the release of its interpretation of Steely Dan's 1972 hit, “Reelin’ In The Years,” releasing July 10. True to the project's journey, the new recording offers a fresh perspective on one of rock's most enduring songs while preserving the lyrical bite that has resonated with listeners since its original release.

For frontman Mick Hellman, the connection to “Reelin’ In The Years” stretches back to his high school years, when a vinyl copy of Can’t Buy a Thrill became a permanent fixture on his turntable.

“‘Reelin’ In The Years’ stands out for those bitter, frustrated lyrics and gives voice to those thoughts that a jilted lover should let go of but just can’t,” Hellman shares, explaining the song’s appeal to himself and creative partners, Amber Morris and Tal Morris.

Dropping the key, easing back the tempo, and settling into a reggae-inspired groove, Highway Wolf transforms “Reelin’ In The Years.” Anchored by Angeline Saris' bass work, Eamonn Flynn's warm Hammond organ, and the dynamic percussion of Karl Perazzo and Mick Hellman, the track trades the original's sharp edge for a laid-back pulse. Tal Morris' electric and acoustic guitars intertwine with vibrant horn arrangements from Johnnie Bamont and Marvin McFadden, while backing vocals from Amber Morris and Avery Hellman enrich the song's relaxed atmosphere.

The reggae influence is the vehicle that carries the song into new territory. Highway Wolf invites listeners to experience a beloved classic from a different perspective while staying true to the spirit that made it unforgettable in the first place.

“Reelin’ in the Years” will be available on all digital streaming platforms July 10. Pre-Save Here.
