Steve Earle And Reckless Kelly Release Second Collaborative Single “DEAD OR GONE TO DALLAS” August 22
Following their July release of “Bad Girls,” the new track blends Earle’s songwriting with Reckless Kelly’s signature edge
AUSTIN, TX — After the buzz of their first single together earlier this summer, GRAMMY-winning artists Steve Earle and Reckless Kelly return with “Dead or Gone to Dallas,” out Friday, August 22, on all digital platforms. The track is available to pre-save now.
Written by Steve Earle, ‘Dead or Gone to Dallas’ is the second single from his recent studio sessions with Reckless Kelly. An uptempo shuffle with a wink, the song finds Earle wryly commiserating about how everyone he knows is either six feet under or has left town for Dallas. "It’s just unapologetic country rock with a band behind me that knows how to do that," shared Steve Earle.
The Americana artist and bands’ latest single is the perfect mix of a sharp, good-humored lament that pairs Earle’s flinty storytelling with Reckless Kelly’s road-hardened drive—delivering the best of both in one irresistible track. “The first time I heard the demo, I thought, ‘this has the perfect song for us to put our stamp on — it’s got that vintage Steve Earle vibe we cut our teeth on,’” shares Willy Braun.
Earle and Reckless Kelly just completed a string of shows together, which included co-headlining the Calgary Folk Festival. Both Earle and Reckless Kelly are on tour for the fall.

About Reckless Kelly:
Americana icons Reckless Kelly have been igniting stages with their high-octane mix of rock and country since 1996. Fronted by Idaho-born brothers Willy and Cody Braun, the GRAMMY-winning band planted roots in Austin after teaming up with drummer Jay Nazz, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the city’s music scene.
Over nearly three decades, they’ve earned a GRAMMY Award, Outlaw Country Group of the Year (2024 Ameripolitan Awards), and Entertainer of the Year (2025 Texas Music Chart Awards). Their 17th album, The Last Frontier (2024), delivered two #1 singles—“Keep Lookin’ Down The Road” and “What’s Left of My Heart”—and fueled a national tour that includes headlining AmericanaFest, a sold-out Ryman show, and appearances at Sony Hall and PBR Gambler Days.
Their beloved Braun Brothers Reunion Festival in Challis, Idaho, continues to spotlight top Americana acts while raising funds for their hometown. As 2025 marks both the band’s 30th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Wicked Twisted Road, soon available on vinyl for the first time ever, Reckless Kelly prepares to take a step back from traditional touring after wrapping The Last Frontier Tour. The band features Willy and Cody Braun, drummer Jay Nazz, bassist Joe Miller, and guitarist Geoff Queen. Learn more at www.recklesskelly.com.
About Steve Earle:
Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Most recently, Earle’s 1988 hit Copperhead Road was made an official state song of Tennessee in 2023.
Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards. Jerry Jeff, released in 2022, consisted of Earle’s versions of songs written by Jerry Jeff Walker, one of his mentors.
Earle has published both a novel I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2011) and Dog House Roses, a collection of short stories (Houghton Mifflin 2003).
Earle produced albums for other artists such as Joan Baez (Day After Tomorrow) and Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on A Gravel Road).
As an actor, Earle has appeared in several films and had recurring roles in the HBO series The Wire and Tremé. In 2009, Earle appeared in the off-Broadway play Samara, for which he also wrote a score that The New York Times described as “exquisitely subliminal.” Earle wrote music for and appeared in Coal Country, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Earle is the host of the weekly show Hard Core Troubadour on Sirius Radio’s Outlaw Country channel.
In 2020, Earle was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. And in 2023, Steve was honored by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. Steve’s latest album, “Alone Again (Live)”, released on July 12th, 2024.
