Highway Wolf Channels Emotion and Art in New “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” Video
San Francisco, CA | March 6, 2026 — Bay Area musical project Highway Wolf premieres the official music video for their reimagined take on John Prine’s beloved classic “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness,” available now on YouTube.
Created by Los Angeles-native visual artist Josh Clark, the video marks his fifth collaboration with Highway Wolf, following acclaimed visuals for “Werewolves of London,” “Silver Springs,” and “In the City.” Clark’s distinctive artistic approach once again expands the project’s cinematic universe, blending music, storytelling, and visual symbolism.
Highway Wolf’s interpretation of “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” remains rooted in Prine’s original, genius sound, while layering in the group’s vocal textures and visual identity. The video opens with familiar characters, The Man and Purdie, before the iconic pup transforms into the Highway Wolf himself, howling so powerfully he breaks the sound barrier, setting the stage for a moving and imaginative visual journey.
"With this video, we wanted to honor the simple emotional core that makes John Prine’s songwriting so timeless. Highway Wolf approached both the sonic and visual elements with that same sense of honesty and restraint, letting the story speak for itself,” remarks Mick Hellman. “Josh Clark did an incredible job bringing the vision to life in a way that feels both respectful to the original and true to who we are today."
The track, featured on the band’s upcoming EP Lone, Never Alone, carries a quiet, melodic weight that tributes Prine’s songwriting while allowing Highway Wolf’s creative voice to deepen its emotional resonance.
